As you approach St. Mary's from the High Street then some of the recent restoration work on the wall becomes obvious. We are particularly pleased with the installation of the railings, returning the street aspect to what the Church looked like prior to the last war. In 1008AD, the land on which the church stands was granted by the king to the abbey of Abingdon, near Oxford who probably built the earliest church on the site, although it is possible that there was an even earlier Saxon chapel, perhaps dating back to the foundations of the town in the tenth century .
